Seriously good countryside

A lot more than you'd expect

The Hopton Crown sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — one of the less celebrated but genuinely spectacular corners of England. You're in proper countryside here, not on the fringes of it. The walks start from the door. The views are real. And within 15 to 30 minutes by car, there's more to see and do than most people realise.

Ludlow — 15 minutes

Ludlow is one of the finest small market towns in England, and we're glad it's nearby. The medieval castle dominates the hilltop. The streets below are lined with independent shops, butchers, bakers, and some of the best restaurants outside a major city. There are regular markets, a famous food festival in September, and enough to fill a full day without trying.

We think you eat just as well at the Crown — and we're somewhat biased — but Ludlow is absolutely worth an afternoon.

Titterstone Clee Hill

The hill that frames your view from the Crown. Walk up from the pub on a clear day and you'll see across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, into Wales and as far as the Black Mountains. It's one of the highest points in the Midlands and almost nobody knows about it, which is half the appeal. The summit has a strange beauty — wild, windswept and unexpectedly dramatic.

The Shropshire Hills

The Shropshire Hills AONB contains some of the best walking in the Midlands. The Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, Caer Caradoc — these are ancient landscapes with good paths, few crowds and real character. We can suggest routes from the door or point you towards longer days out depending on how far you want to go.

Castles, Estates & History

Within 30 minutes of the Crown you'll find Stokesay Castle (a remarkably preserved 13th-century fortified manor house), Ludlow Castle, Berrington Hall, Croft Castle, and the ruins of Wigmore Castle. This corner of the Marches was fought over for centuries and the landscape still bears the marks of it.

The Wyre Forest

One of the largest ancient woodlands in England, the Wyre Forest is just to the east of us near Bewdley. Hundreds of miles of walking and cycling trails through oak woodland, with a fascinating industrial history and excellent wildlife — particularly butterflies and birds.
